Although Chessworks is always open by appointment, it has only been open to the public seven times in its three year existence.

The first two openings were combined with chess tournaments.

The first ever chess tournament at The Moncure Chessworks was held on Mother's Day weekend, 1998.

Professional player, and Armed Forces Champion Emory Tate played a "simul" game against all comers across 10 boards. He went 64-0 on the day.
As part of it’s community centered approach, the big board in the side yard of The Moncure Chessworks was built as a class project by the carpentry and masonry classes of Northwood High School.

The event was an art sale, featuring the work of five Chatham artists. BBQ plates were served by the Mount View A.M.E. Zion church, and a tournament was held in the side yard.
